At Pro Coat Plastering, our craftsmen are trained in traditional lime plastering techniques. Unlike modern gypsum or impervious cement, lime is naturally flexible, vapour-permeable (“breathable”), and sympathetic to historic lime mortar, flint, stone, and brick substrates.

Lime Plastering FAQs
Historic and period homes built before 1919 were designed to breathe without modern damp-proof courses or cavity walls. Modern gypsum plaster and cement trap moisture inside solid stone and brick walls, causing damp, timber rot, and plaster decay. Lime plaster is vapour-permeable, allowing internal moisture to escape naturally into the air.
We work with traditional non-hydraulic lime putty (ideal for delicate historic brickwork, cob, and wattle and daub) as well as Natural Hydraulic Lime (NHL 2, 3.5, and 5) where faster setting times or greater weather resilience is needed.
Yes, we specialize in lath and plaster repairs. We fix hand-split riven oak or sawn timber laths and apply three-coat lime plaster with animal hair reinforcement (horsehair or goat hair) to form strong keys behind the laths.
Lime plaster must be decorated with breathable coatings such as traditional limewash, silicate paint, or breathable clay paints. Standard plastic-based vinyl emulsions must never be used as they seal the surface and destroy the breathability.
